Prior to the pandemic, the teen pregnancy rate in the Philippines was the second highest in Southeast Asia. In Palawan, teen pregnancy accounts for almost 30% of all pregnancies, making it the province with the highest number of young mothers in its region.
The lockdowns and other pandemic restrictions have greatly challenged efforts to mitigate teen pregnancies in Palawan and the whole country. Providing services has become more difficult, making it much harder to access sexual and reproductive health care.
Roots of Health believes that because of COVID-19 disruptions, women and young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are at risk, and must now be prioritized more than ever before.
Roots of Health is registered in the United states as a 501c3 non profit organization, and as Ugat ng Kalusugan in the Philippines as a non-stock, non-profit organization.
In the Philippines, Ugat ng Kalusugan is accredited by the Department of Health (DOH), the Commission on Population (POPCOM), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Provincial Government of Palawan, and the City of Puerto Princesa. We hold Memorandum of Agreements with the Department of Education, Palawan State University and Western Philippines University.
